Ancient China in detail
Ancient China developed along the Yellow River (Huang He) and Yangtze, with farming in fertile loess soil. The Shang dynasty (about 1600–1046 BC) used oracle bones, an early form of writing, and bronze working, followed by the Zhou, Qin and Han dynasties.
The Qin emperor Shi Huangdi unified China in 221 BC, standardising writing, money and measurements, and starting the Great Wall; his tomb is guarded by the Terracotta Army. The Han dynasty developed the Silk Road trade, paper and the civil service. Ideas such as Confucianism, which stresses duty and family, and Daoism shaped Chinese culture for centuries.
