China in detail
China is the world's second-largest economy and one of the most populous countries, with over 1.4 billion people. It has diverse geography, including the Tibetan Plateau, deserts in the north and west, and fertile plains in the east, where most people live, with major rivers such as the Yangtze and Yellow River.
Since economic reforms in 1978, China has grown rapidly through manufacturing and exports, becoming the world's factory, and has moved millions out of poverty. Urbanisation has created megacities such as Shanghai. Challenges include pollution, an ageing population after the one-child policy, regional inequalities and resource use, and China is also a leader in renewable energy.
