What is Isomers?

Within Chemistry, which covers atoms, bonding, reactions, the periodic table, organic chemistry and the chemistry of everyday life, this topic explains Isomers. Chemistry links what you can see in the lab to the particles and bonds behind it, so each topic here shows that link in a model.

Check that you can explain Isomers in your own words and give one example from everyday life. If you can do that, you have understood the core idea.

Understanding Isomers helps you explain why substances behave as they do, from cleaning products and food to medicines.

Isomers in detail

Isomers are compounds with the same molecular formula but different structural formulae. Butane and methylbutane-type chains show this: C₄H₁₀ can be butane (straight chain) or 2-methylpropane (branched).

Isomers have different physical properties, such as boiling point, because branched chains have weaker intermolecular forces, and sometimes different chemical properties. The number of isomers increases rapidly with the number of carbon atoms. Drawing structural formulae carefully shows that each carbon makes four bonds and that different arrangements are different compounds.
