Magna Carta in detail
Magna Carta ("Great Charter") was a document that King John was forced to agree to at Runnymede in June 1215. Barons were angry about heavy taxes, his failures in war against France and arbitrary justice, so they rebelled and made him accept limits on his power.
Key clauses said that no free man could be imprisoned or punished without lawful judgment and that the king could not raise certain taxes without consent. It was annulled by the Pope soon after, but was reissued in later reigns and became a symbol of the rule of law. It influenced later ideas of rights and constitutions in England and in places like the USA.
