What is Mains Electricity and Safety?

Within Physics, which covers forces, energy, waves, electricity, magnetism, light and space explained through motion and experiments, this topic explains Mains Electricity and Safety. Physics topics explain how things move, push, heat up and carry energy, so each one here pairs a definition with a live model you can change.

Check that you can explain Mains Electricity and Safety in your own words and give one example from everyday life. If you can do that, you have understood the core idea.

Understanding Mains Electricity and Safety explains how the physical world behaves, from sport and transport to electricity and medicine.

Mains Electricity and Safety in detail

Mains electricity supplied to homes is alternating current, with a frequency of 50 Hz and a voltage of 230 V in the UK. A three-pin plug has a live wire (brown), neutral wire (blue) and earth wire (green and yellow stripes). The fuse is in the live wire.

If a fault makes the casing live, the earth wire gives a low-resistance path to ground, the large current blows the fuse and the appliance is made safe. Circuit breakers and RCDs switch off quickly when they detect imbalance. Double-insulated appliances have no earth wire. Never touch electrics with wet hands.
