The Causes of World War Two in detail

Long-term causes include the harsh Treaty of Versailles, the Great Depression, the failure of the League of Nations and the rise of dictators such as Hitler, Mussolini and Japan's militarists. Hitler broke the treaty by rearmament, re-occupying the Rhineland (1936) and uniting with Austria (Anschluss, 1938).

Britain and France followed appeasement, giving in to Hitler's demands, as at Munich in 1938 over Czechoslovakia. The Nazi-Soviet Pact of August 1939 cleared the way for Hitler to invade Poland on 1 September 1939, and Britain and France declared war. Historians debate how far appeasement and other factors led to war.
