What is The Eye?

Within Biology, which covers cells, the human body, genetics, evolution, plants and ecosystems: the science of living things, this topic explains The Eye. Biology topics show how living things work, from the cell up to whole ecosystems, with models you can explore step by step.

Check that you can explain The Eye in your own words and give one example from everyday life. If you can do that, you have understood the core idea.

Understanding The Eye helps you explain how living things stay alive and respond to their surroundings, which is central to biology exams.

The Eye in detail

The eye detects light. Light enters through the cornea, which refracts it, passes through the pupil, whose size is controlled by the iris, and is focused by the lens onto the retina, which contains light-sensitive rod cells (for dim light) and cone cells (for colour). Signals travel to the brain along the optic nerve.

In bright light, the iris muscles make the pupil smaller to protect the retina, and in dim light they make it larger. To focus on near objects, the ciliary muscles contract and the lens becomes fatter, and for distant objects the lens becomes thinner. Short and long sight can be corrected with lenses.

How the interactive helps you understand The Eye

Watch the light rays in the interactive. Use any sliders or buttons it offers to change the values and see how the light rays responds.

Before you change anything, predict the result. Then change one value at a time and check whether your prediction was right. This is a quick way to build a correct mental model of The Eye.
