What is Units of Data?

Within Computer Science, which covers algorithms, programming, data, networks, hardware and safe, responsible use of technology, this topic explains Units of Data. Computing topics explain how software, hardware and data work, with diagrams and models that show each step in order.

Check that you can explain Units of Data in your own words and give one example from everyday life. If you can do that, you have understood the core idea.

Understanding Units of Data helps you design, test and explain programs, websites and systems, from small projects to exam questions.

Units of Data in detail

The smallest unit of data is the bit, and 8 bits make a byte. Larger units include the kilobyte (KB), megabyte (MB), gigabyte (GB), terabyte (TB) and petabyte (PB). In the decimal system each is 1,000 times larger than the previous, while the binary system, using kibibytes and so on, uses 1,024.

A plain text character takes about one byte, an MP3 song a few megabytes and a high-definition film several gigabytes. File size = number of items × size of each, such as for images (pixels × colour depth). Knowing the units helps you choose storage and estimate download times.

How the interactive helps you understand Units of Data

Watch the bar chart in the interactive. Use any sliders or buttons it offers to change the values and see how the bar chart responds.

Before you change anything, predict the result. Then change one value at a time and check whether your prediction was right. This is a quick way to build a correct mental model of Units of Data.
