Victorian Britain in detail

Queen Victoria reigned from 1837 to 1901, a period of change and Britain's greatest power. The country was the "workshop of the world", with factories, railways, the Great Exhibition of 1851 and a growing empire. Cities grew fast, with overcrowded slums, disease and poor sanitation, tackled by Public Health Acts and engineers such as Bazalgette, who built London's sewers.

The middle class grew, and there were advances in education, with compulsory schooling from 1880, and gradual extension of the vote. Writers such as Dickens exposed social problems, and reformers worked to help the poor. Wealth and poverty existed side by side. It was an era of confidence, social reform and change.
