Ancient Mesopotamia in detail
Mesopotamia, meaning "land between the rivers", lay between the Tigris and Euphrates in modern Iraq. Annual floods made the soil fertile, and irrigation allowed the first cities to grow, such as Ur and Uruk, around 3500 BC. The Sumerians developed some of the earliest writing, cuneiform, pressed into clay tablets.
Achievements include the wheel, the plough, mathematics based on 60 (leading to our 60-minute hour), law codes such as Hammurabi's Code and ziggurat temples. Empires such as Akkad, Babylon and Assyria rose and fell. The area is often called the "cradle of civilisation".
