Ancient Egypt in detail
Ancient Egyptian civilisation grew along the Nile, whose annual flood left fertile silt that supported farming in the desert. It lasted more than 3,000 years from about 3100 BC, with the Old, Middle and New Kingdoms. Society was like a pyramid, with the pharaoh at the top, then officials and priests, scribes, craftsmen and farmers, with slaves at the bottom.
Egyptians developed hieroglyphic writing, mathematics, medicine, a calendar and monumental building. They believed in gods and an afterlife, which led to mummification and elaborate tombs. Trade, taxes and a strong government held the state together. Sources include temple walls, papyrus and artefacts such as the Rosetta Stone.
