Castles and Knights in detail
After 1066, Normans built castles to control England. The first were motte-and-bailey castles, made of earth and wood, which could be built quickly. Later, stone keeps and concentric castles with thick walls, towers, moats and drawbridges were built for defence and as homes and centres of power.
Attackers used siege weapons such as trebuchets and battering rams, or starved defenders. Knights were mounted warriors who followed a code of chivalry, trained from a page to a squire, and were dubbed in a ceremony. Armour developed from chainmail to plate. Castles and knights changed with weapons such as the longbow and gunpowder.
