The Incas in detail
The Inca Empire, centred on Cusco in the Andes of Peru, grew rapidly from the 15th century, becoming the largest empire in pre-Columbian America. The emperor, the Sapa Inca, was seen as the son of the Sun god.
The Incas built a network of over 20,000 miles of roads with relay runners, terraced farming, stone cities such as Machu Picchu, and used quipus (knotted strings) to keep records, without a written script. Taxes were paid by labour (mit'a). The empire was weakened by civil war and smallpox, and Francisco Pizarro captured Emperor Atahualpa in 1532, leading to Spanish rule.
