The Abolition of Slavery in detail

Opposition to slavery grew in the late 18th century, driven by enslaved people's resistance, such as the Haitian Revolution, and campaigners such as Olaudah Equiano, Thomas Clarkson, William Wilberforce and the Quakers. The Zong massacre and boycotts of sugar raised public awareness.

Britain banned the slave trade in 1807 and slavery in most of its empire in 1833 (with compensation paid to slave owners, not the enslaved). The USA abolished slavery in 1865 after the Civil War through the 13th Amendment. Forms of forced labour continued and slavery still exists today in other forms, so campaigns continue.
