The American Civil War in detail
The American Civil War (1861–1865) was fought between the Northern states (the Union) and the Southern states that seceded to form the Confederacy. The main cause was slavery: the South depended on slave labour for cotton, and tension grew over whether it should spread to new territories, as well as states' rights.
Abraham Lincoln's election in 1860 triggered secession. Key battles included Gettysburg (1863), and Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. The North's larger population and industry led to victory, and Lee surrendered at Appomattox in 1865. About 620,000 soldiers died. Slavery was abolished, though Reconstruction and later segregation showed that equality was far from achieved. Lincoln was assassinated.
