The Columbian Exchange in detail

The Columbian Exchange was the transfer of plants, animals, people, diseases and ideas between the Americas, Europe, Africa and Asia after 1492. From the Americas came potatoes, maize, tomatoes, tobacco and chocolate, and from the Old World came horses, cattle, wheat and sugar.

These transformed diets and economies, such as the potato supporting population growth in Europe. Diseases such as smallpox and measles killed huge numbers of native Americans who had no immunity, and the demand for labour on plantations increased the slave trade. The exchange reshaped the world, with benefits and tragedies.
