The Islamic Golden Age in detail

From about the 8th to the 13th century, the Islamic world, centred on Baghdad, was a centre of learning and culture. The House of Wisdom translated Greek, Persian and Indian texts into Arabic and added new work.

Scholars made major advances: al-Khwarizmi in algebra (the word comes from his book), Ibn al-Haytham in optics, Ibn Sina (Avicenna) in medicine with The Canon of Medicine, and others in astronomy, chemistry and geography. Arabic numerals, paper-making and advanced hospitals spread to Europe. Cities such as Córdoba and Cairo had libraries and universities, and trade spread ideas.
