The Rise of Islam in detail
Islam began in the 7th century in Arabia with the Prophet Muhammad, born in Mecca around AD 570. Muslims believe he received revelations from God, collected in the Quran. In 622 he moved to Medina, the Hijra, which marks the start of the Islamic calendar.
The five pillars are faith, prayer, charity, fasting during Ramadan and pilgrimage to Mecca. After Muhammad's death in 632, the caliphs led rapid expansion, and within a century Muslim rule stretched from Spain to Central Asia. A split over succession led to Sunni and Shia branches. Trade, a common language and tolerance of other faiths helped Islamic society to grow.
