The Agricultural Revolution in detail

The Neolithic or Agricultural Revolution, beginning around 10,000 BC in the Fertile Crescent, was the change from hunting and gathering to farming. People domesticated plants such as wheat and barley, and animals such as sheep, goats and cattle.

Farming produced surplus food, allowing permanent settlements, population growth, specialised jobs, trade and eventually towns and states. It also brought new problems, including disease, inequality and dependence on harvests. It developed independently in several places, including China, the Americas and the Middle East. It is regarded as one of the most important turning points in human history.
